When turbocharger is working, the unbalance of action force of exhaust gas on the turbine impeller and that of air on the compressor impeller lead to the existence of axial force which is undertaken by thrust bearing. Thrust bearing is usually arranged on the side of compressor end. It not only affects the reliability and useful life of turbochargers but also has a large impact on turbocharger’s efficiency. Analysis test shows that the friction loss of thrust bearing amount to 25%~30% total friction loss of turbocharger. Therefore, thrust bearing has its own lubricating oil channel for lubrication. There are two manufacturing techniques for turbocharger thrust bearing: one is to directly process from metal rod material, and the other is to process by powder metallurgy. Turbocharger requires a high processing precision and assembling quality. Otherwise, the worse coordination of working surfaces will result in serious attrition and even damage the whole turbocharger.
